Is the Juice Worth the Squeeze?!

Sometimes in life there are questions that either are or should be asked, in order to determine the viability and correct course of action. As dental professionals we are in the business of serving people and providing care to assist those people in acquiring their health. While we conduct businesses that need to thrive, it is almost frowned upon by the public and profession to actually do so. Complicate that with rising overhead costs, a drop in the economy, insurance interference and the fact that the business success is determined by the individuals who work alongside you and you have the makings of a disaster rivaled only by reality television.

Then the real fun begins as you walk into your home to all the reasons why you are actually working. The loving, caring environment of loved ones waits for you to take your work hat off and put your mommy/daddy/spouse/loved one hat back on! But as you place your hand on the doorknob, you take a deep breath before stepping in. Why? Serving is what we do all day long, so a little more to end the day can't be that big a deal, can it? Yet somehow it is and our lives and our families are left wondering if there is any kind of balance to it all.

After a break from the podium, Matt is back and in rare form! Beginning with the lifeblood of our livelihood, he will address key success principles for owning and operating a successful dental practice and team. He will discuss the adversity that all offices experience in some form or fashion and how to move through it with grace, ease and dignity. He will introduce three key points that "boomerang" from the professional aspect of our lives into the personal that he states are: The Income/Outcome Potential; The Samurai Effect; and Triggers.

From here he will move into the personal arena where he will inspire and challenge those attending to dig into their "why". Your path to personal success can be cleared as long as the motivators are identified and your attitude can be described as being "all in". You'll leave laughing, crying and knowing if the juice is truly worth the squeeze!

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and overcome challenges of both operating and working in the dental office
  • Identify their personal motivators and use them to set goals both in and out of the office
  • Utilize communication techniques to improve relationships both in and out of the office

Recognizing Sleep Breathing Disorders in Your Patient and Incorporating Sleep Dentistry Viably in Your Practice

Obstructive sleep apnea is a deadly, under-diagnosed, under-treated condition. Dentists and hygienists are the first line of defense in recognizing and screening sleep disorders. Impaired cranio-facial development, often as a result of airway patency issues in childhood, result in suboptimal arch development and subsequent malocclusion. The body’s attempt to maintain an airway during sleep apnea events will often destroy the dental environment further. This brings these patients to the dentist. Our diagnosis has to go beyond caries and periodontal disease to look comprehensively at these patients and provide treatment to not only preserve or rehabilitate but to ultimately keep them alive.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the far reaching effects of sleep apnea
  • Recognize the oral clues with which patients present
  • Understand the role of the dentist in screening and treating sleep apnea

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Anne-Maree Cole graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Science degree with honors from theUniversity of Queensland, Australia in 1982. She has been in Practice with her husband since 1983 andin 2006 opened a second Practice limited to a neuromuscular approach to aesthetics and function andspends the majority of her time treating chronic pain patients. This led seamlessly into a need for theunderstanding that sleep plays in the chronic pain patient and in the last several years has dedicatedmuch of her advancing education to this area.

Anne-Maree is the Director LVI Australia, has achieved her Masterships of both LVI and ICCMO, is apast-President of the IACA and Board Member for 8 years. She has a passion for sharing knowledge and looks forward to the opportunity to present at this year’s IACA.

Sam Kherani, DDS; FAGD; LVIM; MICCMO / Mr. Bill Wade

Predictable Hole–in-One with the first NM bite on your patient

Neuromuscular treatment begins with creating a balance within the stomatognathic system. Such balance is brought about by first having the patient go through a reversible Phase 1 orthotic treatment. The quality of the first bite that is obtained will determine the success and the length of time that it takes to reach this balance. There are many factors that hinder such an endeavor and therefore attention to detail with respect to Posture, Temporomandibular Joint Decompression, staying within the Zone of Comfort, lack of any Human Interference allows the practitioner to obtain the best possible bite at the first significant appointment. Not paying attention to such detail will lead to either a failure to reach such balance or may result in the Phase 1 reversible treatment to be a lot longer than it needs to be. Such length in Phase 1 treatment time can lead to lack of compliance even by the well meaning patient.

Learning Objectives:

The participant in this lecture will learn the following:
  • The importance of  the very first bite in the fabrication of the first orthotic. Why a sloppy bite can lead to the failure of treatment or lead to a prolonged treatment time for Phase 1.
  • Why Posture matters and how to make postural adjustments that will lead to the best possible bite at that first appointment.
  • How to create the best possible situation for the lordotic curve to develop in the patient during bite taking.
  • How to best position the patient so that the best possible cervical vertebral curvature is present at bite taking.
  • How to identify the Zone of Comfort within which to take the bite. Such a bite will allow for not just a functional end result but also an aesthetic end result to be possible when the patient goes through the irreversible Phase 2 treatment.
  • How to "dynamically" decompress the Temporo-Mandibular Joint when taking that first bite.

Speaker Bio - Dr. Sam Kherani:

KöR Whitening – The Science of Teeth Whitening

Dr. Kurthy will present a summary of his 35 years of teeth whitening research & development, the reasons for frustrating unpredictability as well as the solutions, and the most current solutions to sensitivity commonly associated with teeth whitening. He will provide the physics and chemistry of whitening that you never understood before and the "why's" regarding typical frustrations of sensitivity and unpredictability of teeth whitening that most dentists encounter in their practices. He will discuss how and why his KöR Whitening System has overcome this unpredictability of whitening, and his research of methods to eliminate acute sensitivity during whitening. You will learn:

  • Why whitening results have been unpredictable
  • How and why KöR Whitening creates 100% predictable WOW results
  • Can teeth get too white?
  • How and why peroxides make teeth lighter
  • Causes and solutions of whitening sensitivity
  • Effect of design and fit of bleaching trays on the outcome of whitening (30 minutes vs. 6+ hours of active bleaching)
  • Why bleaching tray impressions are different than crown & bridge impressions
  • All whitening gels are the same – peroxide is peroxide – right? ABSOLUTELY WRONG!!! ...and why
  • Effects of whitening gel viscosity and water solubility on predictability of whitening
  • Effects of refrigeration, pH and anhydrous vs. aqueous nature of whitening gels during storage and shipping
  • Overcoming tetracycline stains, fluorosis and other challenging cases
  • Bleaching lights – snake oil / smoke 'n mirrors – or do they really work?

NM vs Others ...Who has the Science?

When a man's knowledge is not in order, the more of it he has the greater will be his confusion. (Herbert Spencer)

TMD and occlusion are the most debated and important subject in our profession. And yet, the confusion is the rule rather than the exception.

Harry Truman said: "If you can't convince'em ,confuse'em. Unfortunately many so called "experts" were very successful in this. Evidence base dentistry proponents in the dental faculties are still teaching centric relation which is the center of confusion and evidently unscientific.
